April is National Minority Health Month. The theme for 2016 is “Accelerating Health Equity for the Nation.” Learn what CDC is doing and help raise awareness of the health disparities that affect minorities.

Each Tuesday, to enhance awareness of emerging scientific knowledge, selected science clips will be posted here for the public health community. The focus is applied public health research and prevention science that has the capacity to improve health now.

Community health assessment is a core function of public health departments, a standard for accreditation of public health departments, and a core competency for public health professionals. The Tennessee Department of Health developed a statewide initiative to improve the processes for engaging county health departments in assessing their community’s health status through the collection and analysis of secondary data. One aim of the Tennessee Department of Health was to position county public health departments as trusted leaders in providing population data and engaging community stakeholders in assessments.

During these 25 years, OMHHE has advanced the science and practice of eliminating health disparities and inequities –or health differences that are systematic, unfair, and avoidable--by, for example, collaborating with others across CDC in publishing manuscripts exploring topics such as health life expectancy by race, sex, and geography and contributing to the 2011 CDC Report on Health Disparities and Inequalities.
